Mayor Olive Corcoran now wants the auditor, who revealed in his 2011 audit an annual charge for water services paid to Cork County Council by the town council, brought in to explain details of the payment to them. The charge had gone unnoticed  since 2004.

She had planned to bring a motion before the December meeting of the town council on Tuesday next to that effect. She was told however that it wasn't the norm for local authority auditors to attend such meetings and was assured instead that the response sought and awaited from the former head of finance would be provided at next week's meeting.

The Mayor raised the matter at their November meeting, claiming €187,000 per year had been erroneously paid over by them since 2004. The issue only came to light when the purpose of the payment was specified by the auditor in the 2011 budget.

After a long discussion on the matter, members agreed to have the former head of finance with Cork County Council attend their December meeting to explain the situation before they sat down to agree their budget for next year.

Acting town manager Niall Healy, agreed at that meeting that clarity was required and that they were 'owed an explanation'.

The Mayor seems determined to get to the bottom of the issue, strongly believing they paid over substantial monies they didn't have to.
