Blessed was the Mayor of Fermoy, Michael Hanley among women on Wednesday last, when he took a group of Presentation Sisters on a tour of the town hall and courthouse and on to the site of the former grand house of John Anderson, adjacent to the town park.

Sisters Rosario, Josephine, Carmel, Jo and Ann accompanied the mayor and his wife Fran to the civic offices where he gave them a guided tour of the council chamber and the courthouse. From there, they went across the bridge to view the site of the former stately home of Scotsman, John Anderson, founder of Fermoy. The remains of the newer Fermoy manor, which was destroyed by fire in May 2011, are still to be seen on the site.

The mayor explained that the site, overlooking the Blackwater and with superb views of the town, was earmarked by the Lawton Group, who own it, as the location for a new hotel in Fermoy, but their plans were vetoed by the town council at the time, to his regret, as he felt it would have been of great benefit in terms of attracting visitors to the town.

The mayor and his wife then hosted lunch for the group at the nearby Grand Hotel. Sr. Rosario thanked them for the tour, which they'd found most interesting, and for their hospitality.
