Following last week's appeal by CDYS Fermoy Community Youth Project for volunteers publicised in The Avondhu, the town's first citizen, Mayor Olive Corcoran decided to lead by example and duly presented herself at their Fitzgerald Place premises on Thursday last, eager to help.

She said she hoped that in doing so she could encourage others who may have time on their hands to do the same. "I feel especially that there are a lot of retired professionals out there whose expertise and training could be of great benefit, if they'd see their way to giving some of their time. Even an hour a week would be a help," she said.

With spacious new premises, the CDYS are finding that more young people are accessing their services, so they're calling for anyone who may be interested in volunteering some time to come and help out.

They have a dedicated youth cafe room for young people to chill out, play pool, chat and have a cuppa. They also have a music room for young people to practice music, perform and sing and there's  a community drugs project where one-to-one support is available for young people who may be experiencing difficulties with drugs and alcohol.

Anyone with a skill or talent who feels they'd like to share that talent with young people, and also learn about working with them in a safe and supportive environment with a qualified youth worker, is asked to contact them. They're also looking for people  to get involved in their local community and help supervise a youth drop-in, and they are putting together a fundraising and promotion team.

CDYS provide training and support for all volunteers. They run a weekly drop-in every Tuesday from 3.30-6.30pm, Wednesday from 5-7pm and a music group every Thursday from 5.30-7.30pm.  They're planning to start up a camera group in the coming months. They regularly run workshops based on the needs of young people. The summer months involved a film-making workshop, an art and mural workshop and a music group. The aim is to have more group activities in the coming months which is why they need new people to help out.

They are having an official launch on Thursday, November 21st from 6-8pm. The event is open to all and will give people a chance to see the new premises. There'll be music from their music group on the night and Noel O’Connor, Mayor of Cork County and a Fermoy native, will officially open the premises.
