Snooker fans are in for a real treat this weekend as Fermoy Snooker Club hosts the second annual Cross Invitation Tournament - a competition that has attracted 32 of the country's top amateur players.

The venue is the CYM&WS Hall (Fermoy Parish Centre) which has undergone a significant revamp during the last 12 months. Following very substantial investment, the snooker hall in Fermoy now has 3 top of the range 'Shender' tables, which were specially imported from China - as part of the upgrade, the snooker hall has been fitted out with new lighting and heating systems. The end result is a facility that's right up there with the best.

This weekend's tournament runs through Friday, Saturday and Sunday - and admission is absolutely free. Unfortunately, hosting such a prestigious event doesn't come cheap and Fermoy Snooker Club are extremely grateful to the individuals and businesses who've provided sponsorship.

Those who get along to the CYM&WS Hall can look forward to top class snooker with the likes of Michael Judge, Brendan O'Donoghue, T.J. Dowling, David Hogan and Rodney Goggins all in the shake up for honours. Goggins will be seeking to defend the title he won in 2013 but will face stiff competition from this quality field.

Michael Judge is a former professional while O'Donoghue and Dowling are former Irish champions. Hogan is a former European amateur champion who's in very good form at the moment. The best of local talent will also compete.

For snooker club chairman, Daithi Whelan and his committee, it's going to be a busy few days, however, they're looking forward to the challenge. Daithi was anxious to publicly acknowledge the contribution of FAS, who help maintain and run the CYM&WS Hall. For further information about the tournament contact Daithi on 086-2520319. Club PRO, William Hughes says the tournament is a great boost for snooker in Fermoy.

"We've great players coming and we've great facilities, it should be a really enjoyable weekend," William told The Avondhu.
