Martin Power from Mitchelstown has been named as the recipient of the Ard-Ollamh Award 2018 at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.

The Ard-Ollamh award is presented for outstanding contribution to the promotion and development of traditional music.

Born in Mitchelstown, Martin’s first musical influences were his grandmother, his aunt and his granduncle, all of whom played the button accordion, but it was his music teacher Mary Keane who introduced Martin to the piano accordion, the instrument with which he has become synonymous.

Martin became involved in Mitchelstown Comhaltas and this developed a love for group performances such as Pléaracha, Scoraíocht and Grupaí Ceoil.
