We had no games at the weekend, with the friendly against Galbally on Friday night failing to materialise, despite our best efforts. This Friday is the next training session under lights at Currabowen as the junior 2 men prepare for the league.

The juniors have their first league game on Sunday week next with an away fixture at Mallow. Visiting the graveyard is never easy, and with many clubs juggling between J1 and J2 players in the early season, a very stiff contest is likely.

We are still smarting from the Dennehy Cup defeat, but some consolation is that Mallow has beaten Kinsale and Old Christians on their way through the competition. Many of the team have been training diligently in B2A, and we are having another run out in Currabowen at 7.30 on Friday evening to get ready. All players past and present are urgently requested to attend, as we still have players unavailable to us through injury and other sporting commitments.

The U18 team are training on Monday nights at 7pm, with Joe Purcell and Pa Norris. For full details, contact Joe or Pat. The squad will be virtually the same as last season, as the age has changed to U18. The U16 squad will continue on Tuesday evenings in Currabowen at 7pm.

The mini rugby will not start until September or early October. All schools in the area will have posters and flyers to announce the days and venues.

MEMBERSHIP

Please try to remember to bring your membership forms back to the clubhouse/training location, as registration is vital. Club members and coaches will also be in attendance. We thank St Fanahan’s College, Mitchelstown for the use of their pitch for Saturday morning training.

All boys and girls from town and surrounding areas are eligible to play and train with us. Saturday at 10am at St Fanahans is the time for 6-11 year olds (born in 2002-2007 inclusive). Membership forms will be available on the day.

WHITE COLLAR BOXING

Our first meeting to discuss the event for this season will take place shortly. The organising committee has been meeting since the previous summer, and under the project management skills of Martin Sheehan, the team gained has valuable sponsorships from far and near. The experience gained by some team members in running large events proved priceless and was a huge benefit.

Many non-members helped out on the night, and the result was a very entertaining, trouble free event, with local clubs and charities gaining funds of over €10,000 in total.

We are already looking forward to a bigger and better event next March, again on the Saturday of St Patrick’s weekend, subject to availability of licence and venue.

MUNSTER COACHES TO VISIT

We are pleased to announce that former Munster player, John O’Neill and colleagues will be coming soon to visit schools in the area. Please watch this space for details, and also school notice-boards.

COMMITTEE MEETING

There will be a routine committee meeting at 8.30pm in The Firgrove Hotel on Sunday night, September 29. A full agenda is planned, and everybody is expected to attend if possible. Apologies please to Mary Nolan if unable to come.
