‘Major dent’ for drug trade after North Cork seizure

Gardaí have arrested a man from an address in Glanmire after they seized 33kg of cannabis with an estimated value of €450,000 on Wednesday afternoon.

Gardai have made a significant seizure in the fight against drug dealers in North Cork.

The Avondhu has learned that officers from Fermoy carried out a search in the Castlelyons area in the last 24 hours and discovered €10,000 of cannabis.

A spokesman said: “This is an important seizure as we believe this was destined for the immediate North Cork area. This will be a dent to the drugs trade in our area.

“Gardai are continuing to maintain the normal policing function during the crisis and we will continue to target crime across the area.”

The seizure comes after The Avondhu revealed that a new drugs unit had been set up in the Fermoy District policing areas such as Mitchelstown and surrounding towns and villages.

Sources said that, senior garda management have noticed an increase in the amount of drugs in the area and with this, serious crime will follow. Hence, they have reacted to deal with this threat.

The officers involved in the unit have been drawn from regular policing units as well as other specialist groups across the area and will be stationed in Fermoy.
