1974 – The year of Cork’s first sub-four-minute mile
The festival scene remains vibrant in The Avondhu catchment, with organisers going to elaborate lengths to promote their communities. This is certainly the case in Kilworth which, following on from last year's success, had another packed programme of events.
The festival culminates with the 'Fair In The Square' - a set piece occasion that transforms the normally tranquil village centre into a throbbing hub of musical, sporting and cultural activity.
Given the rain that fell elsewhere in the country, Kilworth escaped relatively lightly which was good news for the fine crowd who turned up to be part of proceedings. Running and cycling have made a major comeback in recent times and last Sunday afternoon's run/walk attracted a record entry - that ranged from serious athletes, to those who covered the 5 kilometres at their own pace. Participants got a great reception on their return to the Square.
Catering for the different age groups is a challenge for any festival committee, however, there can be no complaints on this front with pre-schoolers to the retired all well looked after. Castleyons-based band, The Buachaills were back by popular demand and their mix of traditional tunes and familiar ballads went down a treat last Sunday.
THE HIGHWAY MAN
Kilworth's acting talent was seen to good affect in The Little Village Wedding which took place on Friday night last in the school hall. A full house were treated to some wonderful hospitality and a witty production. The festival draws much of its inspiration from local history and while the older generation will be familiar with the folk memory of famed highway man, Willie Brennan, the fact that Kilworth had its very own 'Dick Turpin' was a source of fascination to younger people.
A feature of the festival is the involvement of so many Kilworth based businesses; along with providing essential sponsorship they hosted a range of events, from poker classics to table quizzes - this level of support is very encouraging and a good omen for the future. All the sponsors got their spot in the 'Love Your Sponsor Tree'.
The success of all festivals hinges on 'buy in' and in this regard, Kilworth is extremely fortunate that so many individuals, voluntary groups and businesses enthusiastically endorse their local festival.
