The M8 has been left off Transport Minister Leo Varadkar's list of motorways where HGV tolls are to be lifted for the month of November.
When the initiative was first announced earlier this year it was understood to apply to all of the country's motorways. Instead just four routes have been chosen, the M1, M3, M6 and Limerick Tunnel. The Minister said he based his decision on feedback received when he mooted the idea and invited submissions.
"By trying a toll free month on these routes I want to see if HGV operators can be persuaded to use the motorways more. I think it's worthwhile to give us an opportunity to study traffic levels in detail and assess the implications and for HGV operators to evaluate the time and efficiency benefits of using these motorways," he stated.
For those reasons, it was hoped locally that the initiative would be extended to the M8. The 'Revive Fermoy' group in particular felt it would be a most useful exercise. So too did the Chairman of Fermoy Town Council's Traffic Management sub-committee, Cllr Michael Hanley.
"I was under the impression it was going to be a national initiative so I'm disappointed," he said on Wednesday. It would have been a help in assessing the value of the motorway route versus going through the town, he said.
