There were heady scenes in Fermoy on Wednesday night when the Loreto girls returned home triumphant after capturing the All Ireland post primary school senior A football title.

They defeated Presentation College, Athenry by a decisive 4-11 to 1-7. In a thrilling game played in McDonagh Park in Nenagh, both sides were even at half time on a scoreline of 1-6 apiece.

"Nerves were a big factor in the first half, I think, but then they settled down and gave it wellie," said Collette Dolan Moore, Chairperson of Fermoy Ladies Football Team, whose daughter plays on the team. Collette, who travelled to Nenagh to support the team said "it was a brilliant game."

The team has players from a number of area clubs. On their return home to Fermoy on Wednesday night after a day in which history was made, the girls alighted from their bus and did a victory walk over the bridge, accompanied by a piper.

Townspeople turned out in large numbers to witness their jubilant homecoming and to congratulate them on their great success and share in the excitement.
