Three students from Loreto Secondary School in Fermoy are among 24 students nationally who have been awarded three-week scholarships to study German in that country this summer.

To qualify, the students had to get over 95% in their Junior Cert German exam to be recognised as high achievers by the State Examination Commission. After that, they had to do an interview in Dublin, conducted by a panel from the Goethe Institute, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the State Examination Commission.

The three who were awarded scholarships are Transition Year students Norah O'Sullivan and Fiona O'Flynn and fifth year student Judwiga Trzestrzelska. Fiona will stay in Kiel from June 1st to 22nd, while Norah and Judwiga are going to Furstenzell from June 22nd to July 13th.

The girls' teachers at Loreto are Ms. Laura Brogan and Ms. Lillian Daly.

During their stay the students will complete a three-week intensive German language course comprising three hour classes each morning. Staying with host families will also allow them to completely immerse themselves in the language while there. None have visited Germany before and are looking forward to some downtime between their studies, to enjoy the sights and culture of the country.
