Loreto Secondary School, Fermoy hosted their annual open evening on Thursday, November 20th last. As is usually the case, this event attracted a very large crowd, each of whom was greeted by principal, Marie Ring.

Given the numbers, it's always a challenge to facilitate every visitor, however, thanks to good organisation, each parent and prospective student was given a thorough run down on what Loreto has to offer. In terms of exam preparation, the school consistently goes the extra mile to ensure pupils have every possible advantage when it comes to getting the best grades possible. Critical to this, is the input of conscientious teachers and Loreto is fortunate to have such a dedicated team.

Much is made of the transition from national to secondary school and even for the maturest of students, it can still be daunting. Loreto works hard to make sure first years settle in to their new surroundings - in this regard, a large school adopts a small school attitude in getting to know everyone, making them feel at home and assimilating them in to school life.

From day one opportunities present themselves at Loreto Secondary School and students are encouraged to make the best possible use of available subjects, modern facilities and the wide range of extra curricular activities on offer. Loreto is mindful of the constantly evolving world of training, jobs and careers. To this end, considerable emphasis and investment had gone in to languages, computers and science. Girls benefit enormously from the experience of forming mini companies and lessons learned in this environment have proved invaluable in later years.

Loreto has become synonymous with high achievers and in such a pro-active learning environment, it's not surprising that exceptional exam results are achieved. This being the case, it's important to stress that academic success isn't the end all and be all of the secondary school cycle and frequently is takes several years to identify a student's talents. Harnessing, moulding and directing these talents is an integral part of Loreto's raison d'etre.
