After twelve incredible years of SCAR (Skibbereen Charity Adventure Race), organised by the Lions Club Skibbereen, with sponsor Carbery, SCAR has raised thousands of euro for local charities. This year SCAR is back and the organising committee is delighted to announce an exciting development to the event on October 18th.
Lions Club Skibbereen president, David Williams explained the new development with the race.
“SCAR is now a duathlon; involving cycling and off-road/road running. We listened to the feedback from our past participants and we know that running and cycling are immensely popular, so we decided to create a simpler event called SCAR Duathlon with just two disciplines – cycling and running. Kayaking has been removed from this year’s event,” he said.
SPORT OR TASTER EVENTS
Anyone aged over 18, with a reasonable level of fitness can take part in SCAR – The West Cork Adventure Duathlon. There are two courses to choose from: SPORT (14.5km run & 37.5km cycle) and TASTER (7km run and 20km cycle), to suit all levels and all ambitions, from competitive runners, cyclists, triathletes to those who simply want to challenge themselves to complete one of the courses. There is also a relay team option in teams of two for the Taster course.
Every year, 100% of participant registration fees go direct to West Cork charities and good causes, which makes this charity event attractive to participants who really want to support their local communities and local charities. Now in its 13th year, to date the annual event has raised a whopping €300,000 for local charities and good causes.
“SCAR has always been known as a friendly, fun and supportive event for all entrants regardless of fitness levels, with our amazing marshals and volunteers making it special for everyone,” Mr Williams said. “These values will carry through to our new SCAR Duathlon, which will take participants through some of West Cork’s most iconic beauty spots including: Lough Hyne, Toe Head, Castletownshend and Tragumna.
“Don’t worry, it will still deliver you a challenge no matter what level of fitness you have”.
