Fermoy long-distance swimmer Owen O'Keefe is in line for a People of the Year award in the competition organised by Outside Magazine, a publication which covers surfing, mountain biking hiking, kayaking, snow sports and other adventure sports.

Owen is one of three renowned distance swimmers in line for the awards, which will be presented on Thursday next, December 19 at a ceremony in Dublin. They are being considered in the categories 'Most Inspiring Person', 'Audience Award', 'Breakthrough Performance of 2013', 'Most Devoted to the Outdoor Scene' and 'Outsider of the Year'.

Owen's marathon swim of a 60km stretch of the Blackwater river from Fermoy to Youghal during the summer caught the attention of the judges, he's also being lauded for his part in the record-breaking six person English Channel relay swim this year which raised €14,500 for Down Syndrome Ireland.
