Last Friday I visited a woman living in a house in the heart of The Avondhu circulation area that I knew had an unusual story to tell. She agreed to talk and show me around the house on the stipulation that her name and address not be published and that no photo taken identify the house or area. I agreed.

“I’ve been living in this relatively new house with my partner, son, daughter, and grandchild for about 5 years and there was never an issue. We’re just a normal family. We go out to work or school, whatever and do the normal things. Then all of a sudden things started to happen just over 4 weeks ago.

"All of a sudden one night there was terrible noises and banging in the house. There were also knocking sounds. They weren’t being caused by a person and it wasn’t a case of them being from the wind or animals or radiators warming up. Deodorant bottles and perfume bottles were flung from the dresser across one of the bedrooms upstairs. I’m not crazy. This all happened. My family and neighbours are witnesses. We could all hear it and see the mess made right in front of our eyes.

"We felt an obvious presence and a chill in the house. We also experienced a blowing in our faces with no logical explanation. It was terrifying. We all felt that we couldn’t stay here on our own if the rest of the family were away. It started to get even scarier when I took out my camera phone and managed to get pictures of the presence. If you look closely they show a shadow of an individual. It’s clearly a man. None of us could sleep and stayed away from the house on various nights.

"I decided to call in a priest to bless the house. He took us seriously and was in the house for over an hour. He was certain of a presence within the house. His advice after the blessing was to assume complete normality. This was hard especially when I got it into my head that it might want to harm me. There was also a slight tugging on the blankets in the bed. It came to the stage where I was saying that we’ll all need counselling. Two of my children are grown and it has affected them badly. My partner is more sceptical but acknowledges that there’s something in the house that’s out of the ordinary.

"I decided to get in a medium. He was great. He confirmed to us after visiting the house that 2 spirits or orbs occupy it. They were once living people. If you look out the window you’ll see a graveyard not far away. They actually have nothing to do with that and aren’t connected with anyone buried there, he told us. The medium was even able to identify the spirits for us. As it turns out we knew both of them when they were alive. They were two young men who passed away in recent times. They were great friends of ours and were lovely people. They are from our home county but when alive had never stepped foot in this house.

"The medium said they are not stuck in what’s often termed as ‘limbo’, where a deceased person’s soul is caught between earth and heaven. They aren’t sad or in pain. They are happy and are just around the house to protect us and mind us. They throw things around and make noise but it’s probably just to show that they are there. We aren’t as frightened anymore. We don’t know how long they’ll stay. It's not the house that they are attracted to - it's us. The medium says that if we moved as a family that they would move too. We know now that they don’t want to harm us. They follow the family. This has nothing to do with religion although I do have crosses all over the place now.”

The woman says she and her family intend on staying in the house and have no idea how long the two spirits will be around. Some times they don’t show themselves at all, as was the case during my visit, but apparently when they do, it’s in the form of shadows. She says the proof is in the photos she has taken especially when one zooms in. None appeared in any I took but have a look at the one's she supplied and make up your own mind.
