A new book by Castletownroche native and Independent photographer Mark Condren with behind the scenes coverage of the NYPD in action, is set to hit the book stores in time for Christmas.
Mark Condren spent two years recording the action with different units of the NYPD and his new book showcases the crime fighting of the New York Police. The book contains images of heartache and heroism and capture a wide array of the many functions of the New York City’s police.
Mark commeneced his career in photography in his teenage years, contributing pictures to The Avondhu and later as an employee of The Corkman newspaper. Mark said capturing the images while out on the beat was ‘heavy going and non stop’.
Speaking about his book, Mark said “No image could ever capture the scale and breadth of the work they do for New York city”.
“These images have brought me closer to an understanding of what it means to be a cop in the city that never sleeps. I am truly humbled and thankful to have witnessed the commitment of New York’s finest first hand. Every day is so different and striking. To give you an example, we were called out one day because there was a hive of bees in Manhattan. When we arrived a guy in a white suit emerged from a police car to deal with it, they have a unit for everything,” he added.
Susan Birnbaum of the New York City Police Foundation said: “We are proud to support this effort and celebrate the work of the NYPD, and are grateful for the collaboration with Mark Condren who captured so many incredible images.”
NYPD Behind the scenes with the men and women of the New York City Police Department will be launched by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar in Dublin on December 10.
