Cork county is in for a treat with over 120 free events taking place for Culture Night 2024.
Now in its 19th year, Culture Night Cork County, supported by the Arts Council and Cork County Council, offers a unique opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate the diverse cultural offerings in their locality.
“Each year, Culture Night is a calendar highlight for the arts in Cork,” said Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Joe Carroll.
“The richness and diversity of the events planned is a testament to the dedicated local volunteers all around Cork county who make this night such a huge success. Whatever you are into, theatre, music, poetry, painting and everything in between, there is an event for you in September. I’m looking forward to sampling some of them myself, and no doubt meeting some of you along the way on the night,” the Mayor said.
Taking place on Friday, September 20, from 4pm until late, several local events are included in the line-up. Locations getting in on the action in Fermoy include the Blackwater Valley Makers premises, Fermoy Library, Fermoy Books, CDYS, Fermoy Community Youth Centre and more.
The old ESB yard on MacCurtain Street will see Fermoy Concert Band and Fermoy International Choir join forces for an hour of entertainment from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
In Mitchelstown, there will be events held at the library, Forrest Hall, St George’s Arts and Heritage Centre and more venues likely. While the Town Hall will open up for an hour of Irish music, dance and song with Comhaltas Baile Mhistéala from 5pm to 6pm.
Events also take to the stage in Watergrasshill, with the First Fruits Arts Centre and Watergrasshill PreSchool hosting special evenings for the cultural occasion.
Cuinne an Maistir in the heart of the village will host an outdoor music event for families from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, a children’s puppetry show from 6.45pm to 7.45pm and a theatrical dance event from 6pm to 7pm.
Among the artists performing for Culture Night Cork County, Connolly’s of Leap presents Icelandic composer JFDR and former Underworld musician, Darren Emerson.
The annual national Culture Night / Oíche Chultúir is a national moment celebrating all that makes up the richness and diversity of culture in Ireland today; connecting people to cultural activities locally and nationally and opening up pathways to ongoing engagement.
