Lismore student Michelle Cullinane has been selected as one of 30 students to take part in the Washington Ireland Programme.

Michelle is a Law graduate of Waterford Institute of Technology and is currently pursuing masters in the area of Child and Family Law in University College Cork.

Michelle is an active member of Fianna Fáil and Ógra Fianna Fáil and has held many positions throughout the organisation, including Youth Officer of the Comhairle Dáil Ceantair and Chairperson of WIT Fianna Fáil Cumann. Commenting, she said “It is a great honour to be offered a place on the program and to be recognised as a future leader.”

The Washington Ireland Program for Service and Leadership (WIP) is a cross-community and cross-border organisation that identifies young people with a track record of leadership and a commitment to service, who excel in influencing their environments for the benefit of others.

The WIP is a six-month program of personal and professional development that brings outstanding university students from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to Washington, DC for summer work placements and leadership training.

WIP looks for students who demonstrate leadership potential and have a substantial track record of service. Who excel both in influencing their environments and in making significant contributions for the benefit of others.

Students gain invaluable practical experience by completing internships. This Summer Michelle will be interning at the ‘Brady campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.’

More than 450 young adults from Ireland have graduated from WIP, representing twenty-five different universities throughout the UK and Ireland. Many graduates are now emerging in important careers in politics, law, business, communications, education and community organisations.
