Lismore is in the running for the 2014 Tourism Town Awards after being included in a shortlist of 15 towns being considered for the prize.

The West Waterford town has been nominated in the small towns category, with this being the first year that the competition has been split into two sections, for large and small towns.

In order to progress in the competition, the town will have to impress a ‘secret shopper’ who will visit Lismore and judge the standard of visitor experience.

Speaking to The Avondhu, Mealla Fahey of the Lismore Heritage Company said that they are ‘delighted’ to have been shortlisted for the competition, and that their success is 'down to the people of Lismore'.

“It is due to the workings of the people in the town. They work together to make it such a good town,” she said.

Mealla added that they are confident they can take home first place in the competition.

“We are working together and we have the ambition. We want to win the overall prize.”

The top ten Highly Commended Tourism Towns will be revealed at the National Tidy Towns Awards in the coming months while the overall awards for Best Large Town and Best Small Town will be announced by Fáilte Ireland in November.
