With beautiful carols ringing out across the Square in Mitchelstown from the CBS Primary choir, there was a lovely festive atmosphere across the town on Friday last, in anticipation of the Christmas tree lights being switched on by the Mitchelstown Lion's Club.

The honour of turning the lights on, was this year bestowed upon sixth class CBS student, David Morrissey, who had been looking forward to the night all week.

Speaking on the night, David's mother Jean thanked the Principal Mary O'Callaghan and the lion's club for giving David the wonderful opportunity to turn on the lights and this will no doubt be a magical memory to be treasured by David and his family for years to come.

She said that this is David's final year in the CBS, but that the Principal, all the staff and his SNA Andrew Dineen had looked after him so well in his time there, and they all really appreciated it.

The tree was also blessed by Canon Michael Fitzgerald, Canon Tim O'Leary and Reverend Eileen Cremin, before President of the Lion's Club Therese Horgan said a few words to thank everyone for coming out to celebrate the turning on of the lights and the Mitchelstown Fire Brigade brought a special visitor from the North Pole.

This year, the lion's club are also giving people the chance to get involved and be part of Christmas in the town, through their 'Sponsor a Christmas Tree Light' campaign. People can buy raffle tickets in all local shops and businesses at only €2 a line or €5 for three and all ticket holders will be entered into a draw to win one of two family holidays to Trabolgan, in addition to a number of wonderful hampers.

All proceeds from the raffle will go towards the lions club, to help fund community days such as family fun days, trips to Trabolgan for the older members of the community, to support local charities, clubs and groups and for the Mitchelstown Lions Club Christmas tree.
