‘Curse of the Starving Class’
On Thursday 22nd May, the Torch Players, Limerick return to Friars’ Gate, this time with Dion Boucicault’s timeless play - 'The Shaughraun'.
Boucicault's work is an action-packed comic melodramatic nineteenth century masterpiece with colourful and hilarious characters, beautiful damsels in distress, swashbuckling heroes, dastardly villains and a lovable charismatic hero.
The story centres on Robert who has returned to Ireland after escaping transportation to Australia. A detachment of English troops and some villains are out to capture him but Robert escapes their clutches with the help of Conn, the Shaughraun.
The all-star cast includes John Finn, Mary Harvey, Peter Hayes, Mary Jones, Pat Kelly, Jackie McBride, Dan Mooney, Sheena Murphy, Jeanne O’Connor and Micheal O’Dubhghaill. The play is directed by Maurice O’Sullivan and tickets are just €15/€12.

So when his lead actor drops out the day before shooting starts, Carter is faced with a dilemma - pull the plug on his dream project or cast the mysterious Vardell, an actor of incendiary talent but with a dark past that Carter knows precious little about.
As events unfold on the set, Carter soon suspects that he may have made a grave mistake.....
