Recently retired Kilworth Garda, Larry O'Hara is to be interviewed live on the John Murray Show on RTE on Tuesday next. And a very interesting interview it promises to be, given the popular former Garda's length of service and varied experiences in the force.
The invitation to the show came on the back of an interview carried in The Irish Examiner recently, detailing Larry's life and times. It mentioned that he was the longest serving member of the force - with a total of 41 years. It also mentioned Larry's involvement in an operation which ended in the arrest of members of an armed gang who held up the AIB in Mitchelstown, stealing a large amount of cash. Another case he was involved in saw the arrest of three people responsible for another armed robbery in Clonmel. Larry spotted the getaway car parked in Fermoy town park which the Gardai were able to trace back to the trio, allowing them to apprehend the men.
Another memorable experience of his was his stint as an armed protection officer for Lord Louis Mountbatten and Lord and Lady Braourne and their two sons. One of the boys was murdered along with Lord Mountbatten in 1979 by the IRA.
Larry's penchant for singing, widely known locally, was also mentioned, leading to him being invited to do a song on the show on Tuesday! Larry has performed, with his trusted Gibson guitar at venues down through the years in Cork and surrounding counties as well as in Portugal, Spain and Greece.
The Carrick-On-Suir native, who grew up beside famed cyclist Sean Kelly, spent the bulk of his career stationed in Ballyduff. After his 30 years there he finished up with five years more service in nearby Kilworth. Larry was honoured by the local community and his Garda colleages on his retirement.
He intends travelling to the RTE studios at Montrose for the interview on Tuesday next which will be the first item on the show when it begins after the 9.00am news.
