Snooker may not have the pulling power it once had, however, the sport has a dedicated and knowledgeable following, many of whom were in The Firgrove Hotel, Mitchelstown last Friday for 'A Night With The Legends' - whose mix of banter, wit and no little skill went down a treat with the almost 200 patrons who paid in.
The 'legends' in question were 1997 world champion, Ken Doherty, Dennis Taylor who won the same championship in 1985 and former UK champion John Virgo, who acted as MC for the event.
The evening kicked off with a meet and greet session with invited guests and sponsors. A select group of players were invited to take on Ken and Dennis, who went easy on their opponents, while at the same time, showing their considerable array of potting and safety play. The duo then squared up in a 'best of three' match with the Ranelagh man coming out on top.
John Virgo oversaw the trick shot section of the programme with some interesting and entertaining results. Warming to the task, Virgo then proceeded to imitate the likes of Terry Griffiths and Alex Higgins - all of which hit the right notes with a good humoured and interactive audience.
Held in association with The Firgrove Hotel and CDK Promotions, the man pulling a lot of the strings was Fermoy's 'Mr Snooker', David Joyce who was roundly congratulated for the time and effort he put in to staging the show.
Versatile hotel manager John Begley, also earned his crust on the night by turning technician to remedy a problem with the sound system. Complete with his box of tools, John sorted out a potentially difficult situation.
In his contribution, David Joyce thanked everyone who supported the event, especially, the programme sponsors who provided financial assistance.
SNOOKER LOCALLY
Fermoy CYM&WS Hall, known to many as 'The Young Mens' is the home of snooker in The Avondhu catchment and is among only a handful of facilities in the country to boast 3 world championship standard tables. The hall is open 7 days a week and new members are always welcome there.
