WEEK 32: 4th - 10th AUGUST 2014

Another good week for Avondhu area locals across in the UK with 7 winners, five of those winners coming again from Fermoy native David O'Meara for the third week running. Also back in the winners circle is Ed Vaughan with one winner and Martin Lane kept the ball rolling with another win. Our total for 2014 now sits on 298 winners combined.

HIGHLAND CLAIMS SHERGAR CUP SPRINT FOR O'MEARA

Fermoy native and trainer, David O'Meara, repeated his 5 winner feat for the third week running, taking his 2014 season total onto the 75 winner mark. His most notable winner came again with the Richard Hughes ridden, Highland Acclaim (7/2jf), who took the Shergar Cup Sprint over 6f, at Ascot on August 9th last.

Following up his recent Newmarket win off a revised mark of 94, this Fermoy bred, Rathbarry Stud three year old gelded son of Acclamation, was putting up a career best performance for the second Saturday running and needed all of champion jockey Richard Hughes' skill in the saddle to do so.

Wearing his customary hood, Highland Acclaim's main market rival Telmeyd blew the start, rearing badly as the stalls opened. Settled in rear off an even looking pace, set by Deeds Not Words, Hughes was happy to sit and suffer, as his mount became slightly keen to halfway. With the race on in earnest, Hughes switched right, looking for racing room as the leader faltered at the two pole. With Remember hitting the front, seemingly travelling like a winner in the hands of Australian jockey, Craig Williams, Highland Acclaim got the required daylight and under a strong ride from Hughes, he began to eat into Remember's lead.

Challenging down the outside, Highland Acclaim joined and passed a tired Remember, who found nil, only to be joined by the fast finishing Golden Steps. With both horses inseparable going to the line, it was a case of who got their nose down where it mattered first. As both horses passed the post locked in unison, it was left to the judge to split them. A relieved O'Meara was no doubt delighted to hear that his horse had got the verdict by the shortest of winning margins, a nose. It was a further two and a quarter lengths back to Remember in third.

Recording his third win from 14 starts, Highland Acclaim has now won all his races at 6f and still looks progressive. He will be penalised again for this win, but not too harshly and may be running off 100 come his next outing. O'Meara may opt for a big Saturday handicap or a listed sprint for his game charge. It was a fitting end to a great day's racing at Ascot, where some of the world’s best jockeys came together to fight out the yearly event that is the Shergar Cup.

David O'Meara, winning trainer, went onto say, "He'll get an entry in the Ayr Gold Cup but he might not be going this year. He's a fast ground horse who used to run with the choke out, but he's got better."

O'Meara went onto record another four winners. They were, in date order, Innocently (7/1) who took the City Welter Handicap (C4), over 5f at Ripon, on August 4th, under Danny Tudhope. This was the three year old Kheleyf gelding's 5th win from 15 starts, winning a race that O'Meara had also won last year.

O'Meara's second winner of the week came with the Danny Tudhope ridden, Almagest (3/1f), who took the Theakston Terrace Bar Handicap (C4) over 2m, at Ripon on August 5th. Almagest was recording his 4th win in all, two of which have now come over course and distance, at Ripon, under burden weights of 10 stone plus.

O'Meara's third winner came with the Sam James (3) ridden Supreme Occasion (1/1f), who took the Coquetvale Hotel Nursery (C4), over 7f at Newcastle, on August 7th. Making her handicap debut after winning her maiden first time out, this two year old daughter of Teofilo, had little trouble defying a mark of 75 here.

O'Meara's final winner of the week came with the Sam James (3) ridden Master Bond (4/1), who followed up his early July Hamilton win, by taking the Grand Spectacular Ladies Night Handicap (C4) over 5f, at Ayr, on August 9th. James, who continues to impress, was riding his 14th winner of the season and has a noted 17% win strike rate to boot.

SI SENOR SCINTILLATING FOR VAUGHAN

Rockmills native and trainer, Ed Vaughan, was back amongst the winners with the Oisin Murphy ridden Si Senor (4/1), who took the Bet Victor Racing Handicap (C5), over 1m, at Kempton Park on August 5th last.

Returning from a three month lay-off, this three year old gelded son of Dansili, made short work of his rivals here, looking a classic improver with maturity and well handled by his trainer.

Breaking evenly, Murphy reined back and settled Si Senor into sixth position early doors, while a three-way pace duel developed in front of him between Ligeia, Surety and Inspector Norse. Always sighted travelling well up the inside, saving ground and getting plenty cover, Si Senor angled two wide off the home turn, as a motionless Murphy sat and dropped back onto the inside of runners.

Biding his time until the cut away, Murphy produced Si Senor with the perfect challenge down the inside rail and literally within three strides they had gone clear, showing a devastating burst of speed which left their rivals for dust. Striding clear, Si Senor won as he liked by some five lengths, with Swordbearer staying on for a remote second and Venturous Spirit plugging on for third.

Visually impressive to the eye, Si Senor seems to have a key asset that could mark him down as a prolific winner, that is, the ability to quicken off a true pace. He covered the final three furlongs in a scintillating 35.85secs off a truly run pace. He would be impossible to live with off slow fractions in a finish. Recording his second win from 6 starts, all of which have come on a synthetic surface, Si Senor will undoubtedly be heavily penalised by the handicapper. He looks well capable of a follow up - winning here off 69, he is likely to be rated nearer 80 come his next run. He looks to have the physicality to carry weight and it would be interesting to see how he would fare on turf also.

Ed Vaughan, speaking to The Avondhu, went onto say, "Si Senor is progressive and going the right way. He's due to go up 10lbs to 79 and will run next in an 0-80 handicap back at Kempton on August 20th." Vaughan was recording his 10th winner of 2014.

ALWAYS RESOLUTE ROUTS RIVALS UNDER LANE

Kilworth native and flat jockey, Martin Lane, added another winner to his ever increasing total, which now stands at 28, aboard the Tim Jarvis trained Always Resolute (50/1), who took the 11 runner Racing Uk App Hanicap (C5), over 1m2f, at Haydock Park on August 7th last.

Sent to post the complete outsider of the field, Always Resolute popped nicely from a wide draw position of 11 and gained a perfect stalking posse, just off the early pacesetter, Suni Dancer. Content off even looking fractions, Lane sat two off the rail in second position, travelling sweetly off the home bend. Stoked up to the three pole, as Suni Dancer tried to quicken on, Lane got an instant response and gathered in the leader easily fully two furlongs from home.

Hitting the front just inside the final two furlongs, Always Resolute strode clear to the commentator’s amazement and duly put the race to bed, belittling his market price in the process. Clear inside the final furlong, Lane had the luxury of having clear daylight between himself and his nearest rival, going on to win by three and a half lengths at the line. Qibtee stayed on well for second, with Where's Tiger back in third place position.

Recording his first win from just 6 starts, this three year old gelded son of Refuse To Bend, had shown some promise in his first two starts as a two year old and had received a handicap mark of 65 on his handicap debut. Dropped to 58 in two runs since, he still looks big and unfurnished and finally healthy and progressive. The manner of this win induced a steward’s inquiry with trainer Tim Jarvis at pains to state that his horses had been under a cloud the last few months and it’s only now in recent weeks that his horses are starting to run well.

Always Resolute is a half brother to 3 other winners and the family have now won 14 races between them. The handicapper will take a dim view of this win, but Always Resolute looks one to keep on the right side of for now. He looks as if he will stay further and may also have a future over jumps in time.

Tim Jarvis, winning trainer, said "Two weeks ago I ran six horses and they were all last or second last, so I just closed down and gave them a break. We've started to bring them back and two ran well on Wednesday and he's won nicely today. None of his family have won early in their careers, once they manage it they carry on winning."

Total UK wins flat/jumps 2014 = 295; Total wins Dubai = 3.
