After being on the receiving end of some nasty Atlantic storms, this week's fine weather comes as a very welcome development. The improvement is particularly good news for those organising sporting events and as a result, a larger than usual crowd is expected in Ballylacken this Sunday when the picturesque venue plays host to the annual Kilworth & Araglin Harriers Point-to-Points.

This part of the country is a hot bed of equine activity, with Kilworth the home of some prominent owners and trainers, while Araglin has a long established hunt club and a very active pony club. The two communities pool their resources for the yearly point-to-points and with a large and enthusiastic group of volunteers to call upon for assistance, the races are always well run.

The 6 race programme will get underway at 1pm sharp with the first racing being a 4-year-old geldings maiden contest. This is followed a half an hour later by 5 and 6 year old mares maiden, which carries a cash bonus of €1,000 to the winner. The third race at 2pm is for 5-year old geldings, with the winning connections receiving The Lovely Cottage Perpetual Cup.

The fourth race of the afternoon is a confined race for 5-year-olds. The penultimate race is the open lightweight which this year is reserved for novice riders. Racing ends with the running of the 6 & 7-year-old maiden geldings.

A GREAT DAY OUT FOR ALL THE FAMILY

Horse racing is an integral part of Irish life and is a pursuit enjoyed by all age groups. With the anticipated fine weather, families should avail of the opportunity to partake in an event that has its roots in the community. It's a huge voluntary effort by all concerned and we shouldn't forget that the racing industry is worth millions of euro to the Irish economy.

Race day organisers want everyone to enjoy the experience and patrons are strongly advised to obey stewards and to keep children supervised at all times.

THANKS TO LANDOWNERS

The goodwill of landowners is essential for the long-term survival of hunting and point-to-pointing. Kilworth & Araglin Harriers take this opportunity to thank the many farmers in the parish for accommodating them this year. To those who will assist on Sunday (doctors, vets, gardai and Red Cross) they also say a sincere word of thanks.
