Applications are now being accepted for eight scholarships in Kilshanna Music, Art & Drama Studio in Mitchelstown and winning this scholarship for someone of any age would mean trying something new, developing something they have already started learning or not living with the regret that they never sampled something that they might love.

There are eight scholarships in a variety of areas across music, art, design and drama.

Speech and drama teacher Louise Howard said that the scholarship is a great introduction to the various subjects available in Kilshanna, especially for people who want to do something new, but they aren’t sure what.

Pearl Robinson who runs the school added that the scholarships are suitable for anyone and are not restricted to either children or adults. There are eight scholarships for piano, drama, woodwind, voice, theory, violin, guitar and art and design. Pearl added that the scholarships make things more accessible, as the financial pressure is taken away.

Emily Keyes who won last year’s piano scholarship said that it gave her an opportunity she might not have had otherwise and even though she only started piano in September, she won in the Kilshanna Feis.

“I only applied to try it out, but I love it now and will be keeping it up,” she said.

Olin Ryan who won the drama scholarship said that he loves the speeches in drama, the games they play and meeting new friends. He came second in the Kilshanna Feis.

Last year’s art and design scholarship was awarded to Stephen Flynn who also came second in the Kilshanna Feis and he said that it lets him try out a lot more in art than what he might do in school. He is determined to keep it up when the scholarship finishes.

The scholarships begin in September, in line with the 2014/15 academic year and are worth up to €1,000, so Pearl is urging anyone who is interested to pick up an application form from Kilshanna at 9 King Street, Mitchelstown and return it before the closing date on June 28. The winners will be announced in The Avondhu.
