Killavullen native Emaoir Hartnett has been awarded the Liam McCarthy Scholarship 2014 by PCI College.

As part of the scholarship, Emaoir will receive full fees for the BSc degree in Counseling and Psychotherapy, a prize to the value of €16,000.

The four-year course, which will be taught at the Cork Education Support Centre, will see Emaoir receive a qualification as a professional counsellor and psychotherapist.

Emaoir has already done many short-term courses in this field of study, such as a course in personal development, and has said that she is ‘honoured’ to receive the award.

“It’s all very surreal,” she told The Avondhu. “I’m very excited and looking forward to learning more about this area.”

Emaoir was one of over one hundred applicants who entered an open competition to win this scholarship.

Entrants were required to write an essay entitled ‘Seeing a Counsellor/Psychotherapist should be as normal as seeing a doctor or a dentist’. Shortlisted applicants were then interviewed by a final judging panel, who deemed Emaoir as the winner.

In her application, she stated: “I would like to help people understand that it’s ok not to be ok and that we can deal with everything, if willing. It would be an honour to get a chance to possibly be a counsellor/ psychotherapist and help others”.

Eoin Stephens, PCI College President, presented Emaoir with her award last Friday.

“It is a difficult task to pick a winner,” Mr Stephens said, “but in the end, Emaoir Hartnett’s passion and dedication to her own personal development journey, as well as to helping others in a voluntary capacity, convinced us that we should award the 2014 prize to her.”

“We know that she will make good use of the opportunity and we wish her well in her studies,” he concluded.
