Fermoy woman Kelly Mongan is through to the live shows after coming through the 'battles' stage of the RTE talent competition, The Voice. Episode seven of the popular show, broadcast on Sunday night, saw Kelly win out over 23-year-old Dubliner Jennifer Healy in a sing-off featuring a Kelly Clarkson song. Coach Kian Egan had to decide between the two and while he said their voices were very evenly matched, he chose Kelly in the end.

Afterwards, 19-year-old Kelly said she was 'overwhelmed' to have gotten through. But she had sympathy for her opposite number too, "I feel so hurt for Jenny because she's such a lovely singer," she said.

Asked if she thought she could win the show now, Kelly said "maybe so, but there's a lot of good singers in the competition. To have got this far even is great."

Kelly, from Rathealy Road , is expecting her first baby in April. She and her husband Bernie married in a lavish wedding in Fermoy last June.

Another Co Cork girl, Shannon Murphy from Castletownroche, will appear on next Sunday's programme in the battle stages. Shannon got through the blind auditions in an episode broadcast a fortnight ago. The 18-year-old, who is studying musical performance at Colaiste an Chraoibhín in Fermoy, chose Bressie as her coach. Shannon appeared previously in The All-Ireland Talent Show as part of John Creedon's final 16.
