Cork Nature Network invites the public to celebrate World Wetlands Day on Sunday, February 2nd, with a guided walk through The Gearagh at 12pm.

As one of Ireland’s most significant wetland habitats, The Gearagh – located at Sleveen East, Macroom – is of exceptional significance both locally and internationally, as it is recognised under the Ramsar Convention and is designated as a Special Area of Conservation and a Special Protection Area, due to its habitats and wetland bird populations.

A charitable organisation that seeks to protect Ireland’s wildlife through education, research, and conservation, Cork Nature Network aim to help restore a healthy, functioning ecosystem for Ireland’s wildlife and human populations. Increasing awareness surrounding conservation is central to achieving this goal.

The walk in early February will be led by Pascal Sweeney, an ecologist specialising in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in Ireland, who will share insights into the unique habitats of The Gearagh, highlighting the rich diversity of its aquatic and semi-aquatic flora and fauna. Participants can also look forward to observing wintering swans, geese, and ducks in their natural habitat.

Waterproof footwear is recommended for this walk. For further details and to reserve your place, visit www.tickettailor.com/events/corknaturenetwork/
