Kilworth man Joe Ó hEachteirn was proud to accept the Joe McDonagh Silver Medal on behalf of Kilworth GAA at Croke Park last Friday in recognition of his efforts to introduce the Irish language into the community.
What’s more, it was the very first silver medal ever achieved by a Cork club since the Joe McDonagh Foundation was formed in 2017.
The medal is gained by achieving a set number of up to 70 targets to promote the Irish language; for a silver medal, it is 35. Joe, who is also the newly-appointed principal of Bishop Murphy Memorial School in Fermoy, is the Irish and Cultural Officer of Kilworth GAA Club and has encouraged the development of the Irish language through subtle means.
“Most clubs would have the bronze wrapped up if they had someone to head the programme,” says Joe. “It’s things like having Irish on the jersey, or having memorabilia in Irish”.
