Since JJ O'Brien and Sons Auctioneers and Real Estate Agents was first founded in the 1940s, the scene has changed a lot, but the business has now seen its way through three booms and three recessions.

JJ O'Brien formed the business in the forties and his son Aidan, who now runs the business joined in 1978 and he said that the family business has seen a lot of changes over the years.

In his father's time, a lot of business would have centred around public auctions, machinery and agriculture, whereas now there is more of a shift towards residential and commercial property.

Something else which has come into the business recently are valuations for the property tax, as people are trying to assess how much they have to pay the Revenue Commissioners.

The business was showcased recently in AIB Mitchelstown and Aidan said that they have been working with the bank since it was known as the Munster and Leinster Bank and he wanted to thank bank and his customers over the years for all of their support.

While the business has seen its way through three recessions, Aidan said that the market is always changing and that can present a challenge.

They have now dealt with three generations of the same families and Aidan said that his children Willie and Aideen would both help out when they are needed.

Over the past few years, there has been somewhat of a fear of buying a home, but Aidan said that younger people are starting to get back into the market now.

He added that previously at the Allsop auctions, 92% of buyers would be investing, but now it is almost split 50/50 between investors and people buying a home.

The manager at AIB Mitchelstown, Des McCarthy said that AIB are committed to supporting small businesses and that the showcasing initiative is a way of showing that support.

“By taking part, it gives our customers the opportunity to showcase their products and services. It gives them the chance to reach a wider audience than they may already have. It has been a great success and the feedback has been very positive,” he said.

Businesses who wish to showcase at AIB Mitchelstown can contact Kelly Ann Richards on 025-24322.
