In the inaugural St Colman’s College 5km run, held in Fermoy on Thursday, May 14, Carraig na bhFear athlete Jamie Buckley came home in first place with a time of 16.44.
Some 348 people took part in the 5km run/2km walk, with proceeds from the event going towards the College’s new Sports Campus.
Jamie led the race throughout, which started and finished in the impressive St Colman’s College sports grounds. The race wound around Fermoy town before returning for one lap of the sports ground and a straight sprint to the finish line.
Denis McCarthy took second place, ahead of Evan McGrath in third. The first woman home was Joan Ennis and the first St Colman’s College student was Shane Hurley in fifth place.
The St Colman’s Parents’ Association provided tea, coffee and food for the assembled masses after the run and student group ‘The Drive’ provided musical entertainment. The new Sports Campus will be located in the existing sports grounds, itself a unique green field amenity in Fermoy.
With sustainability in mind, the development will be carried out on a phased basis. The facilities will include tennis courts, upgrades to the Sports Pavilion, an all-weather jogging track and new dressing rooms.
St Colman's College Principal Veronica O'Donoghue expressed her sincere thanks to all the people and community and business organisations who helped to make this event a success. She particularly thanked the Parents' Association, members of the College staff, students and all who helped out with varied tasks from laying out the course to stewarding.
A special thanks went to the Gardai and the Fermoy Municipal Council for facilitating the run and ensuring all went off without a hitch.
