The setting of James Kilbane's upcoming concert couldn't be more appropriate, as the gospel, folk and country singer is set to perform in Mitchelstown Parish Church this Friday, November 21.
The singer shot to fame when he appeared on You're A Star back in 2004, but he has been gigging since he was 14 and has now released a staggering eleven albums.
Speaking to The Avondhu ahead of his upcoming local concert, James spoke about the influences behind his music, how his faith is central to the sound he produces and what the industry has taught him over the years.
"Singing in church has always been a part of me," he said, speaking about the significance of the choice of venue for this Friday's concert, which will help raise funds for the Town Hall.
'COMMUNITY SPIRIT'
Over the years, he has taken inspiration from and been influenced by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Glen Campbell, Tom Petty and Enya, to name but a few. He stressed that his music tends to resonate with people and what they are going through in their own lives.
"The songs are about overcoming adversity, community spirit and people coming together, love and also songs that reflect kindness," he said. "Christian faith is the real deal, it is true and that's why I do this and try to chisel out some sort of living from it as well."
On the night, James will be supported by the Mitchelstown Presentation Secondary School choir and he said that it's important for young people to experience the power of music and song.
"It will be a night that will stick in people's memories, a good night of country music with a touch of faith and a few Christmas songs. This is something the whole family can go to and is something different," he said.
James told The Avondhu that another important aspect of the show for him is to make time for people afterwards, to meet people and talk to them about his music.
The proceeds from the night will go towards supporting the Town Hall, which is something that James himself supports and he urged people to come out and attend the concert. "A town hall is a central part of the history of the town," he said, as the concert will help to preserve this wonderful building for future generations.
The concert takes place this Friday night, November 21 with doors at 7.30pm and the show starting at 8pm. All are welcome to what promises to be a great night, tickets are €15 and are available from Hyland's Bookshop, The Favourite and from the parish office.
