In its 9th year, the Jack Murphy Memorial Bike Run continues a wonderful tradition of giving generously to a very deserving cause. Almost a decade on and thousands of euros have been raised, thanks to the energy and industry of the Three Counties Motorcyle Club – a voluntary group which Jack Murphy was instrumental in setting up. The Murphy family are delighted that Jack’s name lives on they are fully supportive of this annual event which takes place on Sunday, 4th August.
Famed landmark and popular hostelry, The Glocca Maura Inn, has long been a base for the Three Counties bikers and the forthcoming run will begin and end here.
The cause
All proceeds from the run are going to Aid Cancer Treatment (ACT). The subject of cancer isn’t the easiest to discuss, unfortunately, it’s a grim reality for thousands of individuals every year and brings in its wake, great upset and uncertainty. The good news is that cancer fighting medicines are improving all the time and survival rates have never been higher. ACT relies heavily on public donations to maintain its services and the money it receives from the Jack Murphy Run goes directly to assisting cancer sufferers.
Registration

Registration is a vital part of the process and everyone interested in taking part is obliged to register their details in advance of the 196 km run that appropriately enough takes in three counties – Cork, Limerick and Tipperary – the registration fee is €10. Registration takes place at The Glocca Maura Inn between 10.30am and 12.30pm on the 4th August. Those who return to The Glocca Maura at the end of the run will be entered into a free draw for a top of the range SHARK motorcycle helmet which is valued at €200. This prize has been sponsored by Lee Motorcycles in Cork. Now situated in the Eastgate Industrial Estate, Lee Motorcycles have also donated 3 vouchers to the end-of-night raffle.
Route
This year’s route is a challenging  196km that starts at The Glocca Maura Inn and takes in Cahir, Tipperary, Limerick, Charleville, Mallow and Fermoy before returning to base. There will be two fuel and food stops along the way.
Safety
Rider safety is a priority and to date, the run has an excellent record in this regard. Riders are encouraged to wear high visibility vests over their protective clothing and have their front and rear lights on at all times. Participants should regulate their speed to suit the prevailing conditions and not tailgate fellow riders. A technical support vehicle will accompany the run should any rider encounter mechanical difficulty.
Barbecue
Almost as famous as the run itself is the legendary barbecue that follows. By the time the first of the riders arrive back, the charcoal is hotting up nicely and before you know it, burgers and sausages are are being tossed by an efficient team of caterers. The music kicks in later and if we can get a bit of the weather back that we’ve enjoyed recently, there isn’t a better place to be.
For further information
Anyone with additional queries about any aspect of the run is welcome to contact organiser-in-chief, Patsy Cahill. Patsy has been involved in the run since the beginning and will be glad to assist – the contact number is 087-1357375.
