IDEAS – Youth Arts Film Festival

The IDEAS: Integrated Drama Education and Arts Society are hosting a youth arts film festival at Friars' Gate on Wednesday, 11th December at 8pm that will provide an opportunity for young filmmakers in the county to showcase their work. The IDEAS group will also be showing the premier of their own film, 'Becoming Butterflies' that shows the story of Ritchie and how a conflict between his love of dance and his love of his family become resolved through the support of his friends. The 'Becoming Butterflies' film is part of a long term project funded by the Youth in Action programme that was created by the IDEAS group to allow them to explore issues concerning youth with disability and has seen them work with choreographer Mireya Coloma, participate in the COPE dance festival in Cork and work with young film-maker Hannah Quinn Mulligan over the past six months.

As one of the participants from St Joseph's Foundation exclaimed: "It's hard work, but it's worth it!" Films will be shown from a diverse set of young people, including The County Limerick Youth Theatre, Glenstal Abbey School and Kilmallock's own footsteps Youth Theatre among others.

The IDEAS group are delighted that so many young people wish to take part in their festival, as Fiona Colton who plays Jane in 'Becoming Butterflies' explains: "It's really important. Everyone should have the opportunity to do the things they're able for. If they don't that is wrong because it makes people uncomfortable. This project is about everybody with different disabilities, that they can do anything."

Tickets €10/€5 and bookings is on 063-98727 or www.friarsgate.ie.
