Ireland made history on Thursday by becoming the first country in the world to bring in same-sex marriage with just under two million people having cast their vote.

The official result was declared at Dublin Castle just before 7pm on Friday evening evening and showed that 62.1% had voted Yes with 37.9% voting No.

The results from Cork East showed a Yes vote of 61.7% against a No of 38.3%; Cork North Central - Yes 63.8% No 36.2%; Cork North West - Yes 57.9% No 42.1%; Cork South Central - Yes 65.8% No 34.2% and Cork South West - Yes 56% No 44%.

Minister of State Sean Sherlock said the result 'sent a signal to the world' and said a former school friend of his, flew home from the US to vote, having resided there for 20 years. When asked how the voter remained on the register, the Mallow-based Minister said he didn't know.

His feeling was that people still aspire to Catholic values. "Perhaps we are taking a more tolerant view, perhaps a more Church of Ireland view," he said adding that the Church of Ireland has traditionally been 'more open about social issues' and he felt Irish people may be 'moving towards those values'.

The vote in the two constituencies of Tipperary North and Tipperary South were practically the same (Tipperary North - Yes 56.12% No 45.3%; Tipperary South - Yes 56.1% No 43.9%)while the Limerick vote (Yes 54.8% No 45.2%) was a little more conservative against that of Limerick City which yielded a 64.1% Yes vote against 35.9% No.

Waterford city and county returned a Yes vote of 60.33% against a No vote of 39.67%.
