Ireland: a prime target for Cybercriminals with Phishing leading the charge

Almost three quarters (71%) of Irish businesses suffered at least one cyber attack over the last 12 months. *

WHAT ARE PHISHING SCAMS?

Criminals use fake emails to trick people into revealing sensitive information, like passwords, credit card details, or bank accounts numbers. These scams can take your money or important information and even disrupt your business.

Phishing scams aim to:

  • Steal Money: Phishing aims to get your cash via fake business emails or malware demanding ransom.
  • Steal Data: Usernames, passwords, and bank details are valuable targets. Criminals can sell this information or use it to steal more from you.

TYPE OF PHISHING SCAMS

  • Urgency: Click now! Emails pressure you with fake account issues or limited offers.
  • Spoofing: Fake companies! Be wary of suspicious emails, even slight address changes.
  • Fake Invoices: Malware trap! Don’t click links or attachments in invoices, even from familiar suppliers.

METHODS OF PHISHING SCAMS

  • Email: This remains the most common method, but scammers are adapting.
  • Phone Calls: You might receive calls claiming to be from your bank, credit card company, or supplier pressuring you to give away personal information.
  • Text Messages (SMS): Scammers can send text messages urging you to click on links or download attachments that contain malware.
  • Social Media: Scammers might create fake profiles on social media platforms like Facebook or LinkedIn, impersonating legitimate companies or individuals to trick you into revealing personal details.

By being aware of these different methods, you can be more cautious when interacting online or over the phone. Remember, legitimate companies won’t pressure you into taking immediate action or ask for sensitive information through unsolicited emails, calls, or texts.
