Bishop Murphy Memorial School, Fermoy will soon become the first primary school in the country to provide iPads for every student and member of staff.
Thanks to a large donation from an anonymous donor, as well as fundraising by the school's Board of Management, each of the 103 students in the school will be provided with their own personal iPad for educational purposes. It is expected that the school will receive upwards of 120 iPads in all.
Principal of Bishop Murphy’s James O’Donoghue, said this is an exciting time for the school, describing it as a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’.
“It’s a big deal for everyone here, we’ll be the first primary school in the country to go one-to-one with iPads,” he told The Avondhu this week.
The school have already invested significantly in technology, with electronic whiteboards in classrooms and a 20 PC computer lab, running Window’s 7 and the latest version of Microsoft Word.
“We’re well tapped in, technology is something we’re very interested in. We feel it can maximise the learning potential, it allows for child centred learning, with the teacher as the facilitator.”
The school has chosen to go with the Apple device for the vast array of educational apps available to download and use in the classroom. This said, the traditional book won’t be left on the shelf, and will still play an important role in the day-to-day learning of the students, according to Mr O’Donoghue.
“There is space in the school for at least another 100 boys. There’s an opportunity now for parents to access this technology for their children. It’s a vibrant school; it has a great learning environment and great staff. The children are performing well and this will take it to the next level," he added.
The school expect to have the iPads in operation in classrooms from January, 2015.
