Gardaí from Fermoy’s Road Policing Unit arrested the driver of a van on the M8 motorway on Wednesday of last week for a litany of offences.

Their attention was initially roused when they observed the driver ‘throwing a glass bottle from the van while driving on the M8 motorway’ on Wednesday afternoon.

However, this misdemeanour proved to be only the first of many.

“After stopping the van to have a word, they soon discovered the driver was intoxicated, further inspection of the van revealed two front tyres were bald, and to top it all off, no tax since 2018,” a statement from Gardaí explained.

The driver was subsequently arrested, and the van seized. Gardaí confirmed that a court appearance is slated to follow.

Keeping roads safe

Reminding road users that the current healthcare crisis has not changed the rules of the road, a spokesperson said: “It’s a challenging time, but rest assured we are still out and about, making sure the roads are safe.”
