Intermediate hurlers in championship Saturday

The hurlers of Blackrock GAA Club are in championship action, when taking on Monaleen in the second round, with the winners practically guaranteed a quarter-final spot.

On this Saturday evening, 15 June, Hospital is the venue for the round two of the county intermediate hurling championship game, where Blackrock will play Monaleen at 7.30pm. Both sides scored victories in the opening round – Blackrock defeating Knockaderry while Monaleen overcame Pallasgreen, which means that the winners of this game would almost be guaranteed a quarter-final place.

The sides last met in the All County League 2012. Monaleen playing at home scored a victory, but championship fare is different and Blackrock will be hoping to reverse that result and take a step closer to the knock-out stages.

JUNIOR HURLERS ARE SOUTH LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

On Saturday evening last, 8 June the junior side played Dromin Athlacca in the Dan Dooley Ford Centre Knocklong sponsored South junior B hurling league final in Knocklong and it was Blackrock who were crowned champions with a well deserved 4-14 to 3-08 scoreline, after a lapse of 21 years.

Blackrock laid down a marker in the opening minutes where they completely dominated and as the half came to an there was a margin of eleven points between the sides on a 4-08 to 1-03 scoreline. The goals coming from Pa Cleary, James O’Doherty and Anthony Palmer.

Dromin Atlacca came more into the game in the second half, but Blackrock were not to be denied on this occasion.

The Blackrock team: James McGrath, Brain Coughlan, Eamon Coughlan, Eoin Quinn, Josh Slattery, Mike Roche, Vincent Herbert, David Healy, Don O’Flaherty, Eddie O’Keeffe, Kenneth Douglas, James O’Doherty, James Heffernan, Patrick Cleary, Anthony Palmer. Subs: TG Ryan for E Quinn, Ger Quane for E O’Keeffe, Tommy Lee for J. McGrath.

Blackrock will now play the East champions in the county league semi-final.

Congratulations to local hurler Richard McCarthy on his man of the match display in the Munster senior hurling championship semi-final on Sunday last, 9 June at Pairc na nGael, when defeating Tipperary in a great game by 1-18 to 1-15. Also to Paudie Leahy and Mike Duggan who played on the intermediate and primary schools’ teams respectively.
