Lismore in county Waterford will be the place to be in mid June, as festival-goers will be taken on a literal journey across the globe at the Lismore Immrama Festival of Travel Writing from June 13 to 16. A fun filled family programme was unveiled last Sunday, May 19 at Lismore castle for this, the eleventh year of the festival.

Opening the festival on June 13 are Irish writers Theresa McDonnell, Monica Corish and Kieran Heffernan. Festival-goers young and old will have the opportunity to listen to fascinating tales from some of the most famous travel writers in the world, younger festival-goers will have the opportunity to participate in story workshops and to join in the traditional ‘Free Family Fun Sunday’ afternoon programme.

Some of the world’s top international travel writers will descend upon the heritage town of Lismore enthralling audiences with tales of their travels and adventures including one of the world’s most highly-regarded travel writers, Paul Theroux. Later on June 15, British writer, journalist and broadcaster, Simon Winchester OBE, will speak about his work and travel experiences.

It’s not all about travel writing however, as a programme offering a variety of activities was launched, with something for all ages and interests. Jan Rotte, coordinator of the Immrama Festival, is delighted with the international speakers and the variety on this year’s festival programme, “We are delighted that some of the top international travel writers have agreed to join us in Lismore this year, we have had some amazing names in the past including Michael Palin and Sir Ranulph Fiennes and each year this programme is getting bigger and better, it will be a fantastic weekend in Lismore with lots on offer not just for keen travel writers and enthusiasts but activities for all the family to enjoy.”

Families are in for a treat on Sunday afternoon with a Free Family Fun Sunday programme on offer. And bringing the festival to a close on Sunday evening, June 16, are two writers originally from Lismore. John O’Keeffe who left Lismore in his teens to take his own journey around the world will discuss his book ‘Down the Deerpark Road, Outside Lismore’. John will be joined by Rosamund Burton also from Lismore who will discuss her book ‘Castle, Follies and Four-Leaf Clovers’.
