A defiant John McDonagh has said that he and his family are going to stay where they are until the council put a long-term roof over their heads.

The McDonagh family, who are currently living in a mobile home parked in a picnic area on the Cork Road in Fermoy were issued an eviction notice on Monday evening last stating that if they do not move the mobile home by this Thursday (Oct 3), John McDonagh will be arrested and taken to court on Friday.

John McDonagh met with the housing directorate for Cork County Council in Mallow on Wednesday afternoon and it is understood that John was asked a number of questions, an assessment was made and they offered emergency accommodation in a B&B or hotel to the McDonagh family.

However, Mr McDonagh explained to The Avondhu that he and his wife Natasha have four children under the age of six and two of those children have ADHD, stressing that it would be impossible to look after them within the confined space of a small hotel room.

For this reason, he does not intend on moving his family into emergency accommodation.
