The chairman of ICMSA Farm Services Committee, Patrick Rohan, has criticised the Government’s decision to press ahead in lowering the maximum height of vehicles permitted to use our roads to 4.65 metres.
Mr Rohan said that height had been fixed in 1996 to accommodate the clearance height for the Dublin Port Tunnel and was unrealistically low. He said that a tractor and trailer loaded with straw three bales high was now actually in breach of the restriction and he predicted very considerable confusion and extra costs being loaded on farmers as the full impact of the new restriction is felt.
Mr Rohan noted that in the UK no such height restrictions existed and he said that this illogical and unnecessary restriction will simply add costs to our food production and exporting sectors without benefiting anyone or anything.
The ICMSA Committee chairman called on Minister Varadakar to reverse the decision as quickly as practicable.
