There was shock in Mitchelstown at the death of a 22 year old local lady, when a crash on the Mitchelstown to Cahir road, near Burncourt, claimed the life of Marie Hanrahan. The car which Ms Hanrahan was driving, was struck by an articulated lorry and units of the fire brigade from Mitchelstown and Cahir attended the scene. The popularity with which the deceased was held, a hairdresser by profession, was evidenced by the huge turnout at both the removal and funeral.
Shanballymore Community Council fared best of 17 recipients of amenity grants for the Mallow electoral area, being awarded £4,220. The allocations were the cause of some debate however. Strong pressure from Cllr Conor O’Callaghan, Cllr Carey Joyce and Deputy Ned O’Keeffe, saw initial grants of £100 for three Mitchelstown groups - namely Beechwood Grove Residents’ Assoc, new St Fanahan’s Place Residents’ Assoc and Keane’s Grove/Roche’s Heights/Sarsfield Casey Drive Residents’ Assoc - upped to £200. Other groups to benefit included: Trustees O’Connell Park, Mitchelstown £335; St Fanahan’s Camogie Club, Mitchelstown £370; Castlelyons Community Council £370; Mitchelstown P&P Club £575; Bartlemy Parish Hall £365; Britway Cemetery Group £575; Turnpike-Brough Cross Residents’ Assoc £425; Grange-Fermoy AC £920.
Refurbishment works had been completed at Tallow Credit Union by builder Michael Feeney. Expansion at the premised was necessary due to the popularity of the West Waterford branch, which boasted 3,100 members and assets over £2.6m. The refurbishment saw extra space created in the main office, the manager’s office was enlarged, while a computer room, storage room and other ancillary offices were created.
Ballyporeen National School pupil, Sandra Gubbins, who wrote and illustrated a piece entitled ‘The Golden Key’, claimed 1st prize in the Clonmel Writers’ Week U13 competition. Principal Sr Elsie Walsh had encouraged the school’s older pupils to write stories to be read out to the junior infants, and recognising Sandra’s talent, encouraged her to enter the competition. She was invited to read part of her winning story on Radio Tipp FM. Having also won several art competitions, she surprised The Avondhu reporter when asked what she wanted to do after leaving school - without hesitation she answered “to be a singer”.
1992 was a significant year for Galbally Rugby Club, with the club set to host their 21st fashion show. To be held in The Golden Thatch, Emly, there was to be modelling by some prominent rugby players, including Irish rugby captain, Philip Danaher, Mick Galwey, New Zealander Glen Staunton along with Garryowen player and Limerick footballer, Dan Larkin. DJ Seanie Walshe was to spin the tracks as DJ for the big night, with £5 admission including a cheese and wine reception.
