Samaritans has said that while World Suicide Prevention Day offered an opportunity to focus on the issue at a macro level, it is important that people who are feeling down or have a sense of despair know that they can still access services in a timely way.

According to Samaritans’ national chairperson, Pio Fenton, World Suicide Prevention Day often illuminates areas of service provision and supports that are lacking for people who need them.

“However, in the midst of this, it’s important for anyone feeling down to know that there are always some level of services available.”

A native of Glenville, Mr Fenton stressed that talking about feelings can be an important intervention in suicide prevention.

“Samaritans is always available – around the clock and each day of the year – to listen. Apart from being a listening ear, Samaritans acts as a sign-posting services for people who need more support. Often, when people are under pressure, they cannot navigate they services they might need. Making contact with someone who knows the services and how they can be accessed can be a great relief,” he said.

Last year Samaritans received a total of 412,167 calls to its helpline. The busiest period for the helpline falls between 6pm and midnight.
