Householders across the region are being encouraged to avail of an upcoming opportunity to dispose of their hazardous wastes free of charge.
The Southern Region Waste Management Office has teamed up with local authorities across the region, including Cork City Council and Cork County Council, to operate 8 bring centres for the collection of hazardous domestic waste for one day only on Saturday, 23 January. Two of the free drop-off points will be located at Kinsale Road Civic Amenity Site (8am to 12.45pm) and Rossmore Civic Amenity Centre, Carrigtwohill from (9am to 3.30pm).
The forthcoming drop-off day is an initiative of the Southern Region Waste Management Plan. 10 local authorities in Cork, Clare, Limerick, Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Tipperary and Kerry have been set a number of key targets in relation waste prevention activities.
PROTCTING THE ENVIRONMENT
Waste items including lead acid batteries, engine oil, aerosols, paints and lacquers, fluorescent tubes, and paint strippers and cleaners on the day. Staff from the Environment sections of Cork City Council and Cork County Council also will be present for the events, which are funded by the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government, while information guides on green cleaning and green gardening will also be made available.
“Through hosting this free of charge drop-off day, we are providing householders throughout Cork with an excellent opportunity to dispose of their hazardous wastes in a manner that protects human health and the environment,” explained Pauline McDonogh, Regional Waste Prevention Co-ordinator, Southern Waste Region.
CLEAR LABELLING
Householders are being reminded that each waste type brought to the Kinsale Road Civic Amenity Site and the Rossmore Civic Amenity Centre must be clearly identifiable, segregated and packaged to avoid leaks and minimise risks.
