He may not have turned in his grave, but one suspects that Bishop Murphy would have raised an eyebrow or two at the going ons in 'his' Fermoy school last Thursday evening.

The famous all boys academy was the setting for a very successful and well attended Hallowe'en Fair, which allowed trick or treaters a dry run in advance of the big night. Boys and girls came in all manner of hair-raising costumes and there was plenty to entertain the scary bunch. The new yard was given a Hallowe'en make-over for the occasion that included a spooky wheel of misfortune, vampire wrestling, a ghost hunt and a visit to a reputedly haunted house.

The prospect of sleeping with one eye open didn't seem to deter the youthful spooks, who made a supreme effort when it came to ghoulish make-up, freaking costumes and devilish accessories.

A pumpkin carving contest and a raffle were some of the less scary attractions. The event was expertly planned and 'executed' - credit for this goes to the teachers, youngsters, board of management members and parents' association personnel, who helped co-ordinate the fair.

The successful Hallowe'en party came shortly after the brilliant news that every pupil will soon be issued with their own iPad - an educational first for this historic school - witches and the walking dead in his backyard and the beginning of the end for pen and paper, what would famed Bishop Murphy have made of it all!
