Recently, 30 representatives from National Science and Maths Centres all around Ireland came to Ballylanders for a national network meeting, hosted by Ballyhoura Heritage and Environment Ltd.

The manager of Ballyhoura Heritage and Environment, Fergal Somers told The Avondhu that it was a great honour for Ballyhoura and the outdoor classroom in Griston Bog to be chosen to host this event, as they are a very new National Discover Science and Maths Centre.

"Being chosen to host this prestigious event is confirmation that the Griston Bog project is of national significance and a best practice model for emerging centres in Ireland," he said.

FLAGSHIP PROJECT

The Discover Primary Science and Maths is a flagship project of the Discover Science and Engineering awareness programme and it facilitates teacher training in primary science. Visiting centres and outdoor classrooms, like the impressive one in Griston Bog in Ballylanders, helps students to engage with the learning, experience the bog first-hand, while also making the learning fun and memorable.

The representatives from the centres around the country first met in Balinvreena Community Centre, before visiting Davy's Cottage, the famous Rambling House and the home of the crossroads dancing. This was followed by a full tour of the outdoor classroom in Griston Bog, with detailed presentations of the school work programme especially designed by Ballyhoura for national schools in the region.

Fergal thanked Donie, Joan and Mike from Ballinvreena and Jim, Amanda, Eddie and Tom from the Griston Bog project, for making the network event run so smoothly. The bog is open to the public and free to visit - for more information, visit www.ballyhouraoutdoorclassroom.com.
