The inaugural Andy McGrath Charity Cup took place in Carrig Park, Fermoy last Saturday - an event that honoured the memory of a man who loved his soccer and who did a huge amount to promote it during his life.

Confined to over 30s and comprising a 7-a-side format, the competition attracted 16 teams which surpassed all expectations. Proceeds from the day went to two very deserving causes in cardiac research and Marymount Hospice. Good organization ensured everything fell into place and around 5.30pm on Saturday evening the two teams left standing were Castle Celtic (representing Castletownroche) and Cashel Celtic.

In a really good game, the north Cork side edged out the Tipperary lads on 1-0 scoreline - the all important strike coming from the boot of Donal Relihan. Joint captains, Christopher Relihan and Mick Linehan accepted the very attractive cup from the late Andy's wife, Margaret. Andy's son, Andy Jr was also in attendance.

The Castle Celtic squad in full comprised: Richard Relihan, Dave Relihan, Mike Browne, Tom O'Shea, Damian O'Connor, David Butler, Eugene O'Shaughnessy, Donal Relihan, Christopher Relihan and Mick Linehan - all of whom received trophies.

Critically, the rain stayed away and everyone was able to enjoy themselves. The organizing committee wish to thank all those who helped make the day such a success, especially: Fermoy FC, the McGrath family, the visiting teams, referees, first aid personnel, stewards, catering staff, sponsors (Cavanagh's of Fermoy) and Jackie Howard for having the pitches in such fine order.

Following the presentations participants and spectators were invited to refreshments in The Wagon Tavern where proprietor, Tom Aherne, looked after everyone really well.
