Recently at the Cork Open snooker, four Fermoy players, Tom Aherne, Alan Cleary, Mick Casey and Daithi Whelan all represented the club with distinction with all four reaching the quarter-finals. This is the first time that all our entrants in a major tournament reached this stage.

Alan Cleary came up against the No 2 seed in the quarters and after a very close fought match, Alan was eliminated. Tom Aherne was leading 2-0 but was then pegged back to 2-2 but he held his nerve to win 3-2 on the final black to set up a meeting with Daithi Whelan, who beat Mick Casey in the other quarter-final.

Tom took the early advantage in the semi-final, winning the first frame but Daithi eventually took control to win 3-1 to set up a final meeting with No 1 seed Greg Casey from the Crucible. Daithi came flying out of the blocks winning the first frame but just when he looked like going 2-0 up, he missed the red which allowed Greg back to win the frame and eventually the match 3-1.

Great credit is due to all our players who performed so well and it augurs well for the season ahead.

P.S. It seems that our chairman, Tom Aherne has found the secret of playing well in tournaments. Recently only hours before competing in the Irish championship he done a 5k charity walk before reaching the last 16; then two hours before he played in the Cork Open he had just come down from the top of Galtymore and reached the semi-finals. Must be the fresh air!
